Resilience, an Introduction
Resilience at BBG means embarking on a journey to get to know yourself while you put into place elements in your life that can help your growth and healing, and it means getting stronger so you can be there for others. One of those Building Blocks is Relationship. BBG’s Relationship Building Block is about having at least one person in your life you can count on to be there for you. It’s not always easy to find that person or to know whether when you reach out they will support you in the way you need. So, let’s look at the things you can do to start forming those kinds of secure attachments in your life.
Making us Feel Safe and Secure
Building relationships starts by reaching out to family, friends, or even a therapist. It may take some exploring and courage to find the right person. Like testing a mattress, relationships need trying out in different situations.
Understanding yourself is crucial. Do you know what you need from a relationship? Consider if your expectations are realistic. Relationships with parents, friends, or lovers have different expectations.
If you think you’ve found the right relationship, clearly state your intentions. Make sure the other person is okay playing the role you need in emergencies. If there’s a mismatch, it doesn’t mean you’re unlovable; it’s about compatibility.
Most importantly, having a great relationship with others begins with having one with yourself. Treat yourself like your best friend or soul mate. Imagine how much positive goodness you can share when you care for yourself. The path to great relationships starts with self-treatment.
Disappointments happen, and it’s natural to feel unworthy, but remember, connections are essential. It takes work, time, forgiveness, communication, and clarity. Even if a relationship with someone else doesn’t work out, don’t give up on making it work with yourself.
